Dancer

This is one of the very small number of oil paintings that I have ever done and could have been the first. It is 45cm wide and 60cm high and is painted on hardboard.

Dancer by Andy Slater

I painted it at the Saturday morning art class that I attended while I studied for my A-levels.

They had been cleaning a stock room out and were about to throw away a number of tubes of oil paint. There were very few colours left. Plenty of yellow and green and some other murky colour that I mixed in with the green to produce the not-quite-black background.

The picture was based on a photograph from a magazine of a dancer as he came off stage and whose make-up which must have been somewhat reminiscent of camouflage even when it was fresh, had become even more streaked during the course of his performance.
